The study, published in the European Heart Journal, emphasized the basic heart health benefits of both moderate exercise and moderate drinking. What are moderate exercise and moderate drinking?
Moderate exercise is cardiovascular exercise like running for 20 minutes 3 times a week or brisk walking for 30 minutes 5 times a week. It is also recommended that weight training be added to this a couple of times a week.
Moderate drinking is 1-2 drinks per day for men--no more than 14 drinks per week. For women it is a little less since alcohol is processed differently by their bodies--somewhat less than 1 drink per day.
A number of major studies have found that moderate drinking helps your heart health by reducing the risk of death associated with heart disease. Some other studies have found additional health benefits of moderation.
This study tracked drinking and exercise for almost 12,000 people over 19 years old for 2 years in the early 1980s. It followed them for 20 years, when 10 percent of them developed heart disease and died.
Almost half of those men and women studied died from other causes in the 20 years. Those who never drink were nearly one-third more likely to develop heart disease than those who drink moderately.
But what if you can not drink because your religion prohibits it? Or perhaps you are pregnant or breast-feeding and you should abstain from drinking for the health of your child.
That is where moderate exercise comes in. Those studied lowered their chance of developing heart disease by doing moderate exercise even when they did not drink moderately.
But in the study the people least likely to die were those who both exercised and drank moderately. Those who were sedentary and drank too much were at highest risk of dying.
Moderate drinking protects against ischemic heart disease which happens when not enough blood is flowing because arteries are constricted due to build-up of plaque on the artery walls. That can cause a heart attack.
Moderate drinking can also protect against ischemic stroke which is when the blood supply to the brain is blocked, again by hardening of the arteries. And if you drink red wine moderately you can add some other health benefits too.
Moderate drinking of red wine with a meal high in fat is shown to protect the body against oxidative stress which is when free radicals damage the cells. The antioxidants in the red wine destroy those free radicals before they can hurt you.
And a diet high in fat also threatens your health over the long run since it raises your cholesterol and puts you at risk for hardening of the arteries. So moderate drinking protects you in multiple ways if you want to eat food high in fat.
