Iwas beginning to think I was the only bride in existence who wants to look like herself on her wedding day. One thing I want to keep in my mind, is that I don't want to look "different" on my wedding day, just a nicer, more polished version of the usual Me, so I'll do something with the top to make a base for the headpiece, but the rest I must think how to fit it with my wedding look.
I'm not having hair or make-up "done" -- but I have short hair that doesn't allow for a variety of styles, and I paid big bucks for custom make-up color matching last year, so I have a lot of confidence in the make-up in my bathroom cabinet.
I can see having hair done if you want an up-do but rarely wear one, or if your veil requires an elaborate hairdo to anchor it properly. You don't want to be trying to do something fussy with hairpins while your hands are shaking! I've read, though, that every bride should know how to do her own hair just in case there is a need for her to re-do it at the church or during the reception. I guess this only makes sense, but I'm going to go to the salon and hope for the best.
The make-up thing puzzles me. If you wear make-up most days, it would be, IMHO, a better investment to learn how to apply it effectively yourself, so you could benefit from looking great all the time. If you don't wear make-up regularly, you run the risk of looking like someone else in your wedding photos (so at least have a "trial run" before the wedding, to make sure the make-up artist understands what you want).
I suppose some people just like the professional help as a relaxing little luxury, too. Nothing wrong with that!
