Tree ferns are ferns that have a large tree-like stem. From a distance they could resemble miniature palm trees or something else that has a woody stem. However, they are simply ferns that have a larger and woodier stem than usual. They are an interesting plant and make a wonderful addition to any garden, as long as you know how to care for them and protect them from the weather that they cannot grow in. However, there are some tree ferns that are pretty hardy and can survive in colder temperatures.

Part of the allure with tree ferns is that they remind us of a time we never knew. All ferns bring to mind images of dinosaurs walking the earth and wreaking havoc on other living creatures. Ferns such as tree ferns are always in the picture forming the back drop and the scenery for these creatures. Without plants like tree ferns our perceptions of the prehistoric times might be very different.

If you have been intrigued by tree ferns for a while and want to plant one, there are a few things you need to know. First, you need to make sure that the particular tree fern that you want to plant will grow comfortably in your climate. In general they like warmer weather. However, there are also some tree ferns that are more resistant to the colder climates. So if you think that tree ferns would make a great addition to your garden you do not need to rule them out completely.

Though they look like a tree, they are actually ferns with large stems that resemble trunks. However, they should not be mistaken for trees. They have fronds just like regular ferns do and grow in the same ways. The fact that they have a woody stem gives off that illusion that they are related to trees but in reality they behave like ferns. In fact, it is just a special type of fern.

To plant the tree ferns you may need to do some research so you can understand exactly what you need to do. Make sure it can grow in your climate. Also make sure you know how to care for it. It is a shame to end up with a tree fern and then end up killing it because you did not know what to do.
