The world’s political history has been peppered with politicians’ scandals. The figures have been involved in the extramarital affair, fraud and substance abuse, and abuse of power. The following stories are not immune to the temptations that come with political power.
Chen Shui-bian served as president of Taiwan for eight years. His reputation was tarnished by his son-in-law, Chao Chien-ming who got allegations of insider trading. His presidency’s reputation became worse when he was named along with his wife Wu Shu-chen, son, and daughter-in-law in embezzling, laundering funds and money inappropriately.
Chen Shui-bian is serving a 19-year sentence in the Taipei Prison for convicting on two bribery charges.
Silvio Berlusconi is the current Prime Minister of Italy as well as a successful entrepreneur. He has got evolved with many allegations including fraud, bribery, and corruption. One of the most infamous allegations is his scandals with Patrizia D'Addario and Noemi Letizia. Berlusconi was claimed to have been Patrizia D'Addario’s client on three occasions. Noemi Letizia revealed that Berlusconi and she often spent time together in the past. However, Silvio Berlusconi denied having “spicy” relations with her, swearing on his children’s heads.
On April 6, 2011, the Prime Minister is scheduled to stand trial for allegations stemming from his relationship with Karima el-Mahroug.
Iris Robinson, the 60-year-old wife of Northern Ireland's First Minister, had an affair with a teenager, Kirk McCambley. She helped her lover open a restaurant by soliciting $80,000 from local property developers. The allegations ruined her husband’s political career.
Iris Robinson encouraged friends to provide financial backing to assist Kirk McCambley in a business venture.
Francois Mitterand served as president of France from 1981 to 1995. He had many extramarital affairs, most notably with long-standing mistress, Anne Pingeot. They had a daughter together, Mazarine, who was kept a secret from the press until 1994.
Anne and Mazarine Pingeot turned up at Mitterand’s funeral.
Valentin Kovaley was forced to resign from his position as the Russian Minister of Justice due to the video which showed him cavorting with women in Solntsevskaya Bratva’s nightclub bathhouse. Kovalev was rumored to have a link with this notorious organized crime ring.
Kovalev also convicted on misappropriation of charity fund and bribery charges.
